PP other modifications

Polypropylene (PP) – Other Modification Technologies

With advantages including low density, excellent chemical resistance and good processability, polypropylene (PP) ranks among the most widely‑used of the five general‑purpose plastics. Nevertheless, its inherent limitations, such as high molding shrinkage, brittleness at low temperature, flammability and insufficient heat resistance, have given rise to a wide range of modification technologies. Other modification methods for polypropylene are presented below.

Transparency Modification

Transparent modification is mainly realized by adding nucleating agents to refine crystal grains, adopting random copolymerization to reduce crystallinity, or quenching to freeze the crystallization process. The haze of transparent PP can be reduced to below 10 % with markedly improved gloss, while its heat‑deflection temperature reaches 110‑135 °C, far superior to that of polystyrene (PS). Such properties grant it unique merits for scenarios requiring high‑temperature sterilization or microwave heating. It is extensively used in transparent food containers, baby bottles, microwave‑safe cookware, medical devices and high‑clarity packaging materials.

PP Foaming Modification

Blending modification (e.g. incorporation of LDPE and EPDM rubber), cross‑linking modification, or adoption of high‑melt‑strength PP resin can greatly enhance melt elasticity and foaming performance. Modified PP foams feature light weight, high specific stiffness, outstanding cushioning performance, good heat resistance and favourable chemical resistance. Besides, foamed PP materials are widely applied in packaging, thermal insulation, construction, cushion padding, sound absorption and noise reduction.

Other Modifications

As application sectors become increasingly segmented, diverse functional modifications for polypropylene keep emerging. For instance, antibacterial modification imparts bacteria‑inhibiting or bactericidal capacity to PP by adding silver‑ion, zinc‑ion and other antibacterial agents. It is widely used for public‑health facilities, refrigerator inner liners, washing‑machine inner drums and surfaces of medical devices. Microporous‑membrane modification forms micron‑sized pores via special stretching processes. The resulting PP membranes are high‑value functional products applicable to battery separators, artificial lung membranes and precision‑filtering materials.
