PC/ABS other modifications
PC/ABS MODIFICATION (OTHER TYPES)
PC/ABS is an alloy of polycarbonate (PC) and acrylonitrile‑butadiene‑styrene (ABS). Blend modification achieves synergistic performance optimization. It delivers balanced rigidity and toughness, combining PC’s outstanding heat resistance and impact strength with ABS’s excellent melt‑flow processability. Below are other modification approaches for PC/ABS.
Surface flow‑mark resistant modification PC/ABS alloys may generate surface defects such as flow marks and silver streaks during injection molding, which impair surface appearance quality. Surface flow‑mark issues are addressed by improving material compatibility, adding functional modifiers, optimizing molding parameters and enhancing injection performance. Addition of micro‑nano silicate particles improves mechanical properties and surface gloss. Surface‑quality‑improved PC/ABS is widely used in high‑appearance‑demand products including automotive interior & exterior trims and home‑appliance housings.
Electroplatable modification The core advantage of electroplatable PC/ABS is firm bonding between metal plating and substrate during electroless and electroplating processes, free of blistering or peeling. By adjusting PC‑ABS ratio and incorporating special additives, electroplatable PC/ABS forms uniform micro‑void structures upon etching, providing reliable anchoring points for metallic coatings. It is extensively applied to automotive interior‑exterior parts such as door handles, front grilles, rear‑view mirror housings and emblems requiring high‑gloss metallic finish and good weather resistance. It is also adopted for bathroom hardware, electronic components and decorative home‑appliance parts. Electroplated layers enhance aesthetics while bringing better weather resistance and surface hardness.
Paintable modification Paintable‑grade PC/ABS is developed to eliminate coating defects including paint infiltration, surface pinholes and orange‑peel texture, ensuring uniform paint adhesion and premium appearance. Typical applications include automotive exterior components such as rear spoilers, rear‑door trims, front grilles and rear‑view mirrors, as well as interior parts including switch panels, decorative trims and GPS panels. It also performs well on motorcycle outer fairings and consumer‑electronic housings, delivering uniform and attractive coating effects for complex curved surfaces and edge sections.
