Toughening modification for PET is generally achieved by blending with elastomers to absorb impact energy efficiently. This approach greatly improves notched‑impact strength and elongation at break, and moderately adjusts melt viscosity for better processability. Common toughening routes also include melt‑blending with elastomers such as SEBS‑g‑MAH (maleic‑anhydride‑grafted styrene‑ethylene/butylene‑styrene block copolymer), or copolymerization with neopentyl glycol (NG) to introduce flexible molecular segments.
Main Applications
Toughened‑PET is most typically used for plastic‑steel strapping bands. A small dosage of toughening agents improves toughness and tear‑resistance of strapping belts, preventing fracture during bundling and transportation. In polymer alloys, toughened‑PET can function as compatibilizer for PC/PET blends to optimize interfacial adhesion and enhance overall alloy toughness. Within glass‑fiber‑reinforced systems, toughening additives improve resin‑fiber interfacial compatibility, realizing balanced promotion in tensile, flexural and impact performances.
